The problem

Electrification arrived faster than the switchgear behind it. Shore power, reefers and charging now compete for a connection agreement sized for none of them.

Cold ironing is becoming mandatory across European ports, and it changes the electrical character of a terminal completely. A large vessel connecting draws several megawatts within seconds, on top of crane loads that already swing between regeneration and peak draw many times an hour. The port's connection agreement caps its maximum demand, and exceeding it is expensive. Meanwhile the transformers and switchgear absorbing these swings sit in salt-laden air, which accelerates every degradation mechanism they have.
